Earthwork on the old alignment near Taipo is included in this amount.
There are 4 tunnels estimated for.
The large one under Beacon Hill is the Chief work on the line.
The estimate for this is given under several Minor Heads.
About 1,000 feet at each end is estimated as fully lined, the rest has only a flying arch.
A great deal of expense had to be incurred as a precaution against fever at both faces. All the nullahs running down the Hill sides had to be trained and the pools and back waters filled up. At the North Side also under advice given by the Medical Officers in the Colony the European Quarters have been placed on the hill tops above the Taipo Frontier Road on the side of the valley opposite the Tunnel.
The Public Works Department refused to let the quarters be built above the Catch Water Drain of the Kowloon Water Works. An Aerial ropeway is provided for bringing the men to and from the works.
There are two small tunnels of 250 and 350 feet in length respectively and one of 900 feet in length at Taipo. The short tunnel 200 feet long may be avoided, but I am not certain as yet until the approach cutting is made.
The tunnel at Taipo is made to avoid running round a headland as laid out by Mr. Bruce on a very long and rather sharp curve. Making the tunnel also avoids crossing a bay in rather deep water and does away the necessity of some rather difficult bridges.
Under Roads is included the diversions of Des Voeux and Gascoigne Roads in Kowloon, the Frontier Road near the village of Lok Lo-ha and the same road at the North End of Taipo Station.
Bridges.
The masonry of Bridges is estimated for double line and Iron Work for single line.
There are 15 Major Bridges of over 40 feet
